Personal Barbie-doll by ~Sykoticstalker27:iconSykoticstalker27:

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

The hissing sound of spraying fills my ears
And the smell of “Lil' Princess” Hair Spray
Makes me choke and gag as it has for years
But Mommy's  painfully tight grip stops me from squirming away

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Next comes the spray of fake tan, covering my legs and arms
While delicate porcelain squares hide my missing baby teeth
And still Mommy adds more gems, jewels and charms
Until the girl I see in the mirror looks nothing like the real me

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

A warning from Mommy this time- be quiet and stay in place!
While her hand gently zips up the sparkling dress,
Mindful of a thousand pink sequins and layers of white lace
All the while she “tuts” over my face (“What a mess!”)

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Again Mommy shushes my protests and complaints
So quietly I sit, becoming Mommy's personal Barbie doll
I don't move (not once!) as she layers makeup upon my face
All the while she says that I'm just like Cinderella getting ready for the ball

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

A final hissed-out spray of Lil' Princess
And bit more shadow above the eye
And finally, Mommy gives me a loving smile and gentle caress
Calling me a "her precious little butterfly"

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Again Mommy shushes me, stifling the question burning in my mind
Tell me, Mommy, do you love the girl with missing baby teeth,
The one whose hair isn’t curled, whose eyes are unlined,
The one that plays with basket balls and wears her brother’s baseball cleats?

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

This time, I’m the one shushing Mommy- telling her not to talk
Because I don't want to hear her loving, praising words
The one's I never hear when I'm playing games in the dirt or on the sidewalk
The one's I only ever hear when Mommy's doll and never as Mommy's girl

Author's Comments

I saw a documentary on junior beauty pagents the other day. Basically girls from age 5 to to 15 are painted, hair-sprayed, spray-tanned, glittered, and (in some cases) given false teeth to hide gaps caused from losing baby-teeth.

In the end, the girls end up looking like they're forty-years-old, and it's a really disturbing sight.

The worst part is that the girl's mothers are the ones responsible for it!

They pay thousand of dollars for makeup, fake teeth, fake tan, hair dye, hair spray, dresses, swim suits, music, and other pagent sundries.

And yes, there isa swim-suit competition, but the stage moms don't care that the audience is probably full of pedophiles...or even that they're teaching their daughters that beauty can only be achieved through makeup, maintaining "a figure" (in some cases that involved severe dieting or even starvation to get rid of a girl's "baby fat"), and covering yourself in sequins or glitter (they seriously go overboard with sequins and glitter).

Also, the girls in these pagents all seem utterly miserable. I bet all of them would rather be at home playing games or with dolls rather than being dolls themselves.

Since I find this whole "junior pagent" idea just all-around disturbing, I thought I'd write a poem and then rant about it. (I'm well-adjusted that way).

Comments are, as always, very much appreciated!

Wonderfully written. (Favourite!)

I completely agree. I watched a few of those pageants myself, I was so disturbed by all the flash surrounding these little girls. I wonder if they've ever done a study on the percentage of those girls who get eating disorders in their teens, because I'm sure the statistic would be disgustingly high. The percentage of young women with eating disorders who were not exposed to the scaring spray of spray-on tan and glitter covered dresses is already high (about 4%). The very idea of stage moms scare me to no end, and although pagents are probobly the most extreame version you can find, even some figure skating stage moms pressure their girls to be thin and pretty (still glitter covered). All of these stage parents (they're not just moms, they can be dads too) just give me the heebie jeebies. I can be glad that I know that even if I did get into any sort of stage buisness (acting or what not) my mom would not be one of those crazy stage moms who put you down and control your life. If being the opritave word. :P

Wonderful, amazing work, once again. :D

How very therapeutic!

I like the ambiguous use of Shhh!, and the way the poem feels spoken, due to its not being forced into a rhythm pattern.

As for the pageants themselves... well, it says something about some parents, I guess.

:D Glad you liked it.

And it certainly makes you appreciate your own parents.

Thanks so much for the comment and fav!

It's amazing what some parents will do to their kids isn't it? I think a lot of stage parents live vicariously through their children. In the documentary, when one of the girls won, her mom jumped up and yelled "I won!" and then wore the little girl's tiara on her head; it was seriously disturbing.

Yeah - no matter how inexplicable, random and irritating their actions and decisions may be, at least they're normal.

I did think of Little Miss Sunshine while writing this.

:aww: Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
